Question: If he will list the (a) tonnage of goods and (b) passenger numbers which passed through the port of Portsmouth in the last year for which figures are available; and in each case where Portsmouth ranked relative to other United Kingdom ports. - Inc figs.

Answer: Mrs. Virginia Bottomley: To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment, Transport and the Regions if he will list the (a) tonnage of goods and (b) passenger numbers which passed through the port of Portsmouth in the last year for which figures are available; and in each case where Portsmouth ranked relative to other United Kingdom ports. [10334] Glenda Jackson: The latest figures available are taken from "Port Statistics 1995" published by HMSO. (a) In 1995, some 4.4 million tonnes of freight passed through Portsmouth. Portsmouth was the 20th largest port in the United Kingdom. (b) Passenger numbers are published only for international sea passenger traffic. In 1995, Portsmouth was the second busiest international passenger port in the United Kingdom with 3.3 million international sea passenger movements through the port. Portsmouth also has significant domestic traffic, however information supplied to the Department on UK domestic passenger routes is commercially confidential.
