Question: How many prisoners currently being held in prisons in Great Britain originate from Northern Ireland. - Text of letter from Richard Tilt of Prison Service and fact that no information is available centrally regarding the principal address of those committed to custody in England and Wales.

Answer: Mr. Corbyn: To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many prisoners currently being held in prisons in Great Britain originate from Northern Ireland. [21254] Miss Widdecombe: Responsibility for this matter has been delegated to the Director General of the Prison Service, who has been asked to arrange for a reply to be given. Letter from Richard Tilt to Mr. Jeremy Corbyn, dated 20 March 1997: The Home Secretary has asked me to reply to your recent Question asking how many prisoners currently being held in prisons in Great Britain originate from Northern Ireland. No information is available centrally regarding the principal address of those committed to custody in England and Wales. The available information on where prisoners originate from is for the court first committing to custody. Provisional information shows that one person was recorded centrally as being received into a prison in England and Wales who had been first committed into custody by a court in Northern Ireland in 1996. Information for Scotland is a matter for the Secretary of State for Scotland.
