Mr. Tipping: To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will list those areas of Forestry Commission woodland proposed for sale in the next three financial years in (a) England, (b) Wales and (c) Scotland; indicating for each (i) its area, (ii) its approximate location and (iii) if an agreement is in place to protect public access. [19707] Mr. Kynoch: [holding answer 12 March 1997]: The subject of the question relates to matters undertaken by Forest Enterprise. I have asked its chief executive, Mr. Gordon Cowie, to arrange for a reply to be given. Letter from Gordon M. Cowie to Mr. Paddy Tipping, dated 20 March 1997: The Secretary of State for Scotland has asked me to reply to your Question about the sale of Forestry Commission woodlands. The Forestry Commission's current disposals programme will continue until the end of the century, and the selection of properties for sale will accordingly be staged over that period. Advance notification of properties to be placed on the market is given in the Estates Gazette before a firm decision to sell is taken by the Commission. Copies of the Estate Gazette are to be found in the Library. We have, therefore, not yet decided which areas we will be selling over the next three years, but I can tell you which forest areas are at present being offered for sale on the Open Market. I have indicated those where a Continued Public Access Agreement has been agreed or is under negotiation. The Commission encourages local authorities to enter into the Access Agreements it offers them but it is, of course, up to the local authorities to decide whether or not they wish to accept the offer.
