Mr. Meacher: To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment what regulations cover the discharge of liquid wastes from abattoirs; how these regulations are implemented; and what plans he has to review their operation. [20768] Mr. Gummer: Discharges from abattoirs into the public sewer are regulated by the relevant sewerage undertaker under powers contained in the Water Industry Act 1991. Discharges from abattoirs directly into controlled waters are regulated by the Environment Agency under powers contained in the Environment Act 1995.
