Mr. Llew Smith: To ask the Secretary of State for Wales what was the total mileage travelled in Wales by cars and taxis in (a) 1987 and (b) 1996. [13319] Mr. Gwilym Jones: The total mileage travelled on major roads in Wales by cars and taxis is estimated at 5.40 billion vehicle miles in 1987 and 6.98 billion vehicle miles in 1995, the latest year for which data are available. Comparable estimates for minor roads are not available.
