Answer

Mr. Savidge: To ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland what progress has been made on the establishment of an electricity interconnector with Scotland. [36918] Mr. Ingram: This private sector project is principally a matter for NIE and Scottish Power. Consent for the Scottish leg of the project was granted by my right hon. Friend, the Secretary of State for Scotland, on 13 October 1997. My noble Friend, the Minister for the Environment (Northern Ireland), announced on 26 March 1998 his decision to approve the revised outline planning application submitted by Northern Ireland Electricity plc (NIE) for the siting of the converter station at Islandmagee. This is conditional on the acceptance by NIE of the Notice of Opinion to approve the application, which will be subject to appropriate conditions.
