Answer

Mr. Don Foster: To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Employment how many initial teacher training places funded by his Department have not been filled by the Teacher Training Agency in each subject for the current year. [59198] Mr. Charles Clarke: The following table shows the target and actual intake to initial teacher training for the year 1998-99. We continuously monitor recruitment to initial teacher training in order to be responsive to supply and demand. A £130 million package of short-term measures designed to boost teacher recruitment, particularly in the key subject areas of mathematics and science, was announced by my hon. Friend the Minister for School Standards on 27 October. Details of this have been placed in the Library. These places were relinquished by the OU, subsequently reallocated to providers offering new part-time courses starting in April 1999, and so will not have yet been filled. {4} The English target given here differs slightly to the one announced by the DfEE in 1997. This is because the target the TTA allocated to `drama' is currently included in other. {5} Technology includes Design and Technology, Information Technology, Business Studies and Home Economics. {6} Other includes Classics, Economics, Other social sciences, Other subjects and, currently, drama. Therefore, the target for `other' differs slightly to the one announced at the end of 1997 because of the inclusion of drama. Source: Recruitment TTA Survey of ITT Providers 1998-99 Target DfEE.
