Question: To ask the Secretary of State for Social Security, what was the total cost to public funds of claims by employees and the public for compensation in respect of (a) personal injury and (b) employment protection in the last year for which figures are available. - Table given.

Answer: Mr. Townend: To ask the Secretary of State for Social Security what was the total cost to public funds of claims by employees and the public for compensation in respect of (a) personal injury and (b) employment protection in the last year for which figures are available. [59057] Mr. Denham: The information is set out in the table. The total cost to public funds of compensation paid by this Department, excluding the Child Support Agency, in the Financial Year 1997-98 in respect of personal injury, and employment protection _________________________________________________________________________________________________. £ Personal injury 606,817.74 Compensation awarded to employees or ex-employees of the 265,718.59 Department by either the Civil Service Appeal Board or by Employment Tribunal _________________________________________________________________________________________________. Note: The Child Support Agency do not keep statistics on these figures separately, but the total cost to that Agency, in respect of personal injury and compensation awarded for the year 1997-98, was £35,400.
