Question: To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs, what assessment he has made of recent reports concerning changes in the number of Indonesian troops in East Timor.

Answer: Ann Clwyd: To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what assessment he has made of recent reports concerning changes in the number of Indonesian troops in East Timor. [58434] Mr. Fatchett: We are concerned at reports of an increase in the number of Indonesian troops in East Timor. I raised our concerns at troop levels with President Habibie and Foreign Minister Alatas in Jakarta last month. We endorse the UN Secretary-General's recent call for a substantial reduction in the Indonesian military presence in the territory.
