Answer

Mr. Gordon Prentice: To ask the Secretary of State for Defence what estimate he has made of the cost of maintaining the garrison in the Falklands over each of the next five years. [57855] Mr. Doug Henderson: The cost of the Falklands garrison in the current financial year 1998-99 is expected to be just over £70 million. In the absence of significant modifications to the size and shape of the garrison, which are not currently foreseen, its cost is likely to continue to be roughly of this order in each of the next five years.
