Question: To ask the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport, when he plans next to conduct a survey of deserted medieval villages in England. - Including figures.

Answer: Mr. Gordon Prentice: To ask the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport when he plans next to conduct a survey of deserted medieval villages in England; and if he will make a statement. [56171] Mr. Alan Howarth: Following an earlier survey of deserted medieval settlements in England, English Heritage has identified about 2,000 such sites as possible candidates for either new or continuing statutory protection. Following further research into these sites, 104 such recommendations have so far been made to my Department and a further 50 recommendations are in preparation. Studies are continuing into the other sites.
