To ask Mr Chancellor of the Exchequer, when he last reviewed the operation of the Office of the Building Society Ombudsman and the extent of his remit.

Mr. Healey: To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer when he last reviewed the operation of the Office of the Building Society Ombudsman and the extent of his remit. [48066] Mrs. Liddell: The Office of the Building Society Ombudsman is a private body, recognised by the Building Societies Commission as complying with the requirements of a compensation scheme set out in the Building Societies Act 1986. Its remit was widened by the Building Societies Act 1997.
