Answer

Mr. Pickthall: To ask the Attorney-General, pursuant to the Parliamentary Secretary, Lord Chancellor's Department answer of 19 May 1998, Official Report, column 342, on the Roger Levitt case costs, how many prosecution preparation hours were claimed; and how they were assessed. [46590] The Attorney-General: Fees paid to the three prosecuting counsel briefed by the Serious Fraud Office in the case of Roger Levitt were assessed by a combination of hourly and daily rates. The records necessary to ascertain the exact number of hours claimed in preparation cannot be accessed save at disproportionate cost but I refer my hon. Friend to the answer of 28 June 1995, Official Report, columns 702-03, given by the then Attorney-General to my hon. Friend the Member for Warwickshire, North (Mr. O'Brien) which shows the fees paid to counsel and sets out the hourly and daily rates.
