Mr. Townend: To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer what proportion of GDP was represented by all taxes and national insurance in (a) 1996-97 and (b) 1997-98; and what is his forecast for 1998-99. [72434] Mr. Milburn: The ratio of net taxes and social security contributions to GDP was 35.4 per cent. in 1996-97 and 36.4 per cent. in 1997-98. The new forecast for 1998-99 will be published on 9 March with the Budget.
