Question: To ask the Secretary of State for Defence, how many UK servicemen and servicewomen were serving or were based in Sierra Leone on 1st September, including those serving on UK warships within the territorial waters of Sierra Leone; and if he will list (a) their units and (b) the units to which they were attached. - Includes figures.

Answer: Mr. Mackinlay: To ask the Secretary of State for Defence how many UK service men and service women were serving or were based in Sierra Leone on 1 September, including those serving on UK warships within the territorial waters of Sierra Leone; and if he will list (a) their units and (b) the units to which they were attached. [94618] Mr. Spellar: There were 25 UK service personnel deployed to Sierra Leone on 1 September 1999, and were drawn from the following units: HQ (London District) HQ Royal Marines 39 Regiment Royal Artillery 3 Staffords 9/12 Lancers RAF St. Mawgan RAF Innsworth Coldstream Guards Army Cookery School Royal Marines Royal Scots East of England Regiment Scots Guards City of Edinburgh University Officer Training Corps 4 Royal Green Jackets (Volunteers)/Royal Irish Prince of Wales Royal Regiment Royal Highland Fusiliers.
