Question: To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Employment, how many appointments to public bodies were made by his Department in (a) 1997-98 and (b) 1998-99, broken down by (i) gender and (ii) ethnicity; and if he will list the chairmen appointed to those bodies in those years, similarly broken down. - Includes figures.

Answer: Joan Ruddock: To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Employment how many appointments to public bodies were made by his Department in (a) 1997-98 and (b) 1998-99, broken down by (i) gender and (ii) ethnicity; and if he will list the chairmen appointed to those bodies in those years, similarly broken down. [92515] Mr. Mudie: My right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for Education and Employment made a total of 68 appointments and re-appointments to non-departmental public bodies (NDPBs) in 1997-98. Of these, 48 were men and 20 were women. Three were from ethnic minorities. Included, in the total of 68, he appointed or re-appointed seven chairs, all of whom were men. None was from an ethnic minority. In 1998-99, my right hon. Friend made a total of 142 appointments and re-appointments to NDPBs. Of these, 101 were men and 41 were women. Nineteen were from ethnic minorities. Included in that total of 142, he appointed or re-appointed eight chairs, one of whom was a woman. None was from an ethnic minority.
