Question: To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Employment, if he will make a statement on the differences beween spending shown in local education authorities' section 52 statements and that shown in their section 122 statement for 1998-99 which are attributable to the existence of grant maintained schools.

Answer: Mr. Laurence Robertson: To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Employment if he will make a statement on the differences between spending shown in local education authorities' section 52 statements and that shown in their section 122 statement for 1998-99 which are attributable to the existence of grant maintained schools. [89745] Ms Estelle Morris: Estimated expenditure on schools which were grant maintained in the financial year 1998-99 was not required to be included in budget statements prepared by local education authorities under section 122 of the Education Act 1996 since these schools were funded direct by the Funding Agency for Schools. Budget statements prepared under section 52 of the School Standards and Framework Act 1998 cover estimated expenditure for the financial year 1999-2000. Whilst grant-maintained status remains until the end of August, local education authorities have been responsible for passing on funding to these schools since 1 April and section 52 statements include the full year's funding, together with any transitional protection to which individual schools may be entitled.
