Question: To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Employment, what recent assessment he has made of shortages of physics teachers in secondary schools. - Including figures.

Answer: Mr. Clappison: To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Employment what recent assessment he has made of shortages of physics teachers in secondary schools. [107132] Ms Estelle Morris: In January 1999, there were just 22 vacancies for physics teachers in maintained secondary schools in England and Wales. The figure for January 1998 was 24. The vacancy rate for secondary science teachers was 0.5 per cent., the same as the overall secondary vacancy rate.
