Mr. Ronnie Campbell: To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Employment how much funding was earmarked for each of the last four years for literacy in primary schools. [143486] Ms Estelle Morris: Funding for the implementation of the National Literacy Strategy in primary schools over the last four years is as follows: 1997-98: £5 million (National Literacy and Numeracy Projects) 1998-99: £57 million (including £7 million for Year 6 booster classes) 1999-2000: £74 million (including £24 million for Year 6 booster classes) 2000-01: £88 million (including £21 million for Year 6 booster classes). In addition, a total of £96 million of Books for Schools grant was allocated to primary and secondary schools in 1997-98 and 1998-99. £98 million has been allocated for literacy in primary schools in 2001-02 (including £23 million for booster classes).
