Question: To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Employment, what percentage of pupils gained the expected level of literacy in (a) 1997 and (b) 2000. - Inc figures.

Answer: Mr. Tony Clarke: To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Employment what percentage of pupils gained the expected level of literacy in (a) 1997 and (b) 2000. [152497] Ms Estelle Morris: In the 2000 Key Stage 2 tests, 75 per cent. of 11-year-olds achieved the expected standard for their age in English, an increase of 12 percentage points since 1997. The 2000 results are clear evidence of the success of the National Literacy Strategy.
