Question: To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Employment, what plans the Government has to integrate the grant for reducing infant class size into the rate support grant to local education authorities to enable this funding to be provided through the local management of schools formula. - (Holding answer 14 June 1999).

Answer: Mr. Tyler: To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Employment what plans the Government have to integrate the grant for reducing infant class size into the rate support grant to local education authorities to enable this funding to be provided through the local management of schools formula. [86682] Ms Estelle Morris: [holding answer 14 June 1999]: We are providing specific grant funding to enable Local Education Authorities to meet our pledge to limit the size of infant classes to 30 or below by September 2001. No decisions have yet been taken on the mechanisms for funding smaller infant class sizes beyond 2001-02 but revenue funding will continue to enable schools to continue to employ teachers taken on as a result of the class size policy.
