Answer

Mr. Hancock: To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many people seeking to study in the UK have been refused entry in each year since 1997; and if he will make a statement. [31225] Angela Eagle: Information on how many people seeking to study in the United Kingdom and are refused entry is not available. This is because refusals are recorded according to the reason for refusal and not according to the entry category (i.e. student, visitor, work permit holder). However, statistics are available on the number of people refused leave to enter and removed where the main reason for refusal was because the arrangements for the proposed study were unsatisfactory or unacceptable, or because the intention to study was not genuine and realistic. The table gives this information for 1997 to 2000, the latest year available. It does not include persons intending to enter as students, but refused entry on other grounds. Passengers refused leave to enter and removed from the United Kingdom, by selected main reason for refusal, 1997 to 2000 _________________________________________________________________________________________________.
