Question: To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department, what his estimate is of the number of Gibraltarians resident in the UK. - Includes figures and text of letter from John Kidgell of the Office for National Statistics.

Answer: Mr. George Howarth: To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what his estimate is of the number of Gibraltarians resident in the UK. [32021] Ruth Kelly: I have been asked to reply. The information requested falls within the responsibility of the National Statistician. I have asked him to reply. Letter from John Kidgell to Mr. George Howarth, dated 4 January 2002: The National Statistician has been asked to reply to your recent question about the number of Gibraltarians resident in the United Kingdom. (3202) The Labour Force Survey (LFS) provides estimates of numbers of UK residents by country of birth and by nationality. The estimate of the number of UK residents who were born in Gibraltar, based on an average over the 12 month period December 2002 to November 2001, is 12,000. The LFS sample size is too small to provide a reliable estimate of the number of nationals to Gibraltar who are resident in the UK.
