Mr. Clappison: To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Skills what estimate he has made of the proportion of pupils attending (a) state and (b) independent schools who are from an ethnic minority. [194195] Mr. Stephen Twigg: In January 2004, 16.9 per cent. of pupils (of compulsory school age and above) in maintained primary and secondary schools were classified as minority ethnic origin. Information on pupils' ethnic origin is not collected from independent schools.
