Dept for Environment Food and Rural Affairs

Question
To ask the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, what her policy is on the proposed ivory stockpile sales from (a) South Africa, (b) Botswana and (c) Namibia.
Answer

Norman Baker: To ask the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs what her policy is on the proposed ivory stockpile sales from (a) South Africa, (b) Botswana and (c) Namibia. [182249] Mr. Morley: The Government will continue to insist that the very strict conditions governing the proposed one-off sales of ivory are met in full before any trade is allowed to proceed. In particular we want to be assured that the potential importing country/countries are able to effectively regulate their domestic ivory markets and that the one-off sales will not lead to an upsurge in poaching.
