Question: To ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland, what discussions he has had with representatives of Phoenix Natural Gas on the recent increase in gas prices; and if he will make a statement.

Answer: Lady Hermon: To ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland what discussions he has had with representatives of Phoenix Natural Gas on the recent increase in gas prices; and if he will make a statement. [164390] Mr. Pearson: I have met with the Chairman and Chief Executive of Phoenix Natural Gas to express my deep concerns over proposed gas price increases in Northern Ireland. I have also been in contact with all the parties concerned including Northern Ireland Authority for Energy Regulation (NIAER), the General Consumer Council (NI), National Energy Action and the Department of Social Development who have responsibility for the Northern Ireland Housing Executive and Fuel Poverty. I have also met a delegation of NI political representatives from all the major political parties to hear their concerns. I have asked NIAER to carry out an urgent investigation into the proposed increase and the circumstances leading up to Phoenix's announcement on 19 March, and to report to me by 31 March 2004.
