Question: To ask the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry, how many SMART awards will be made this year; and if she will make a statement. - Inc figures.

Answer: Sir John Butterfill: To ask the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry how many Smart awards will be made this year; and if she will make a statement. [182067] Nigel Griffiths: The Smart scheme closed to new applications in August 2003 and the final 22 awards were made this year. The Grant for Research and Development was introduced in June 2003. Offers of Grant for Research and Development worth £28 million were made to 320 innovative small businesses in the period January to June 2004.
