I do not think that the hon. Gentleman and I really agree on the European Union. I still believe that it is essential for the British national interest. As someone once said,"““the United Kingdom’s membership of the European Union is vital to our national interests, to our position in the world, to our nation’s economy and . . . to the peace of Europe.””—[Official Report, 20 June 1996; Vol. 279, c. 1095.]"
