Proceeding contribution from Baroness Amos (Labour) in the House of Lords on Monday, 20 June 2005. It occurred during Ministerial statement on European Council, 16–17 June.

European Council, 16–17 June

My Lords, I thank the noble Lord, Lord Tugendhat, for those comments, which endorse the strategy of my right honourable friend the Prime Minister. With respect to the timetable, it is right that the budget does not need to be agreed until the end of next year, but clearly the new countries that have joined the European Union would like some time to prepare. There was a move to agree the budget now so that they could work on projects and programmes for funding from early 2007. We will take full account of their interests, not only under our presidency but in future discussions.
