My Lords, what will happen to the Iraqis who told those lies? For the sake of natural justice, we have a duty of care to the Army, and when servicemen are put in such a situation by people who prove to be totally unreliable—indeed, lying—witnesses, something should surely be done to make it clear that this will not happen again. I find it extremely difficult to believe that the Crown Prosecution Service would ever have brought a case based on such disgracefully flimsy evidence if it had been a civil case. What is the point of our having an entirely admirable system of justice in the Army, a duty of care and operational integrity when it all collapses—I can only say for political reasons—and we are left with people who were unjustly treated for a very long time? What will happen to those who made that possible?
