Proceeding contribution from John Leech (Liberal Democrat) in the House of Commons on Wednesday, 30 November 2005. It occurred during Adjournment debate on Light Rail.
Light Rail
In my constituency, a major benefit would be the resulting modal shift from car to tram. A local developer developing a site in the constituency has been heavily promoting the fact that people will be able to use the tram to get to and from the city centre—but now, given the uncertain future of Metrolink, the same developer is offering people cars as an incentive to buy flats in that development. Surely the fact that Metrolink has been delayed in south Manchester is increasing congestion in the area.
