Proceeding contribution from David Leslie Taylor (Labour) in the House of Commons on Wednesday, 19 October 2005. It occurred during Adjournment debate on Private Sector (NHS).
Private Sector (NHS)
Would my hon. Friend add a fourth criterion to the three that he has given, and with which I do not disagree? The resources given to the private and independent providers in the NHS are similar to the NHS units with which they compete. Independent sector treatment centres, for example, have no obligation to provide acute and continuing care. They are also given, on average, 40 per cent. more resource, so they are able to cherry-pick, compete with and close down NHS units.
