Proceeding contribution from Lord Greaves (Liberal Democrat) in the House of Lords on Tuesday, 21 March 2006. It occurred during Debate on bill and Committee proceeding on Electoral Administration Bill.
Electoral Administration Bill
I agree with that, but the answer is that people should go to the polling station to vote and not have a postal vote. The noble Lord, Lord Lucas, made a speech that I could march behind with a banner—an excellent and inspiring speech. He said that some of the arguments being used are what men used to say about women. I must say that it is what men still say about women in some places, in some contexts. Along with some of my party colleagues, I have been fighting a bit of a battle in recent weeks to get a couple of excellent candidates nominated for the local elections who happen to be women and who happen to come from certain ethnic minorities. We have been told very firmly that that is not work for women and that people will not vote for them.
