Proceeding contribution from Earl Howe (Conservative) in the House of Lords on Monday, 24 April 2006. It occurred during Debate on bill and Committee proceeding on Health Bill.

Health Bill

That is a very encouraging reply and I am most grateful to the Minister. I am also grateful to other noble Lords who spoke in support of the amendment—especially the noble Baroness, Lady McIntosh. In the light of her comments, I say to her that I stand corrected. She rightly spoke about the artistic judgment and discretion of theatrical producers or directors, and not for a second would I wish to have such discretion and judgment diluted by any amendment to the Bill or by any regulations. Indeed, I do not know whether she has seen, as I did the other day, the Jonathan Miller production of ““Rigoletto”” at the Coliseum, which very successfully translates the setting of ““Rigoletto”” into 1950s Bronx, New York, with many of the characters smoking on stage. It is a triumphantly successful idea.
