Proceeding contribution from Lord Palmer (Crossbench) in the House of Lords on Monday, 24 April 2006. It occurred during Debate on bill and Committee proceeding on Health Bill.
Health Bill
This is the most emotive amendment that we have discussed today or, indeed, last Thursday. I fully support it. It has not sunk in that clubs will now come within the compass of the Bill. For the 10 million people who use men’s clubs, it will be a dramatic shock. It is the users of working men’s clubs whom I particularly feel for, especially as they are often the poorest members of our society. It is further unjust discrimination, as the noble Lord, Lord Naseby, eloquently argued, and I very much hope that the noble Lord, Lord Warner, will take on board the moving words of the noble Lord, Lord Tebbit, about servicemen’s clubs.
