Proceeding contribution from Lord Walton of Detchant (Crossbench) in the House of Lords on Monday, 24 April 2006. It occurred during Debate on bill and Committee proceeding on Health Bill.
Health Bill
I speak as a lifelong member of a registered trade union. It happens to be the British Medical Association, but nevertheless it is a registered union. The purpose underlying this part of the Bill is to offer the same protection to a large number of staff, in the interests of their health, who work in private members’ clubs—of which the noble Lord, Lord Naseby, said that there are 10 million members—as is now going to be available to people working in pubs, restaurants and similar places. That is the crux of the issue.
