I did the Minister a disservice. I should have recognised that he would want to bring in another of these slightly questionable surveys that seem to reappear every half hour. As I understand it, one is by ASH. We are indebted to my noble friend Lord Stoddart for providing us with the information that ASH has received £796,000 in the past five years. I assume that some government money must have gone into doing this survey—that is, my taxes, your taxes and everybody else’s taxes. I hope that the Minister can reaffirm that there have been no consultations with the Government or anybody in the Department of Health about the survey done by ASH. The second survey was carried out by one of the cancer charities. I may be wrong, but I suspect that were it not for the Government’s support, it would not have bothered to do the survey in the first place. It would be enormously helpful in relation to this clause if a comparable survey could now be done of the nation’s Labour clubs, Conservative clubs—I am not sure whether we have many Liberal clubs, but I presume that there are the odd half dozen around the place—and the British Legion. Those are four key areas that would make up a percentage of members’ clubs—I am not sure how much but it would probably be well over 50 per cent. It would be very interesting, and only fair to the clubs, which have been hoodwinked and led right up the garden path up to Report stage, if they were given the resources by the Government to undertake a proper structured survey, carried out by one of the reputable market research companies, on members’ attitudes to the various dimensions of the Bill, particularly whether their clubs should be exempt.
