Proceeding contribution from Baroness Ashton of Upholland (Labour) in the House of Lords on Monday, 15 May 2006. It occurred during Debate on bill on Electoral Administration Bill.
Electoral Administration Bill
My Lords, I am grateful to the noble Lord. The noble Baroness, Lady Hanham, rightly indicated that she had information about Third Reading that I did not have. That is right and proper, too, because it is the hands of the other parties to determine that. I am merely a Minister—I turn up when I am told to. But what I take from all our debates today is a desire that, if we are able to get this Bill out of your Lordships’ House in good shape, I should invest time to ensure that we can achieve that. I always live in hope that that means I will not lose anything at later stages and I always do my best to try to accommodate when I can. But regarding the loans amendments, which I said I would return to and which are important to all political parties here and in another place, and the service voters, I am under an obligation to do what I said I would do for your Lordships’ House. If that means that I need to discuss the possibility of moving Third Reading, I will do so—but in conjunction, of course, with the noble Baroness, Lady Hanham, and the noble Lord, Lord Goodhart, for it will not be in my gift. I hope that if we feel we need a slight delay, we can make that proposal together, so that I can do what I promised to do.
