Proceeding contribution from Lord Christopher (Labour) in the House of Lords on Tuesday, 23 May 2006. It occurred during Debate on bill and Committee proceeding on Animal Welfare Bill.

Animal Welfare Bill

I apologise for arriving in the middle of the debate and so I shall confine my few remarks to the amendment of the noble Baroness, Lady Byford. I share, in a sense, the anxieties about what is ““wild””. I have two thoughts on this. First, is a Dartmoor pony wild? Is an Exmoor pony wild? What is wild? Secondly, and slightly anecdotally, some years back I was on an extended tour of China—indirectly paid for by the Chinese Government—and, among many other things, I was taken to a circus where one of the acts consisted of performing domestic cats. It was only because of the sense of courtesy that I felt obliged to observe to those who had taken me that I stayed—it was appalling. So what is ““wild””? That is my question.
