Proceeding contribution from James Gray (Conservative) in the House of Commons on Thursday, 6 July 2006. It occurred during Adjournment debate on Armed Forces Personnel.
Armed Forces Personnel
I agree with my hon. Friend to a degree, but does he accept that the central truth of all modern defence thinking is that there are only two main players in NATO—the United Kingdom and the United States—both in terms of defence spending and other capabilities? The notion that, somehow or other, we will persuade some of those very small European nations to play an important role in NATO operations is pie in the sky. In fact, the future peace of the world depends on the US and the UK, together with France to a lesser degree, operating in concert.
