Proceeding contribution from Evan Harris (Liberal Democrat) in the House of Commons on Thursday, 2 November 2006. It occurred during Debate on bill on Education and Inspections Bill.
Education and Inspections Bill
I do not want to prolong the debate, but the reason maths and physics are different is that, according to the Joint Committee report:"““Children enjoy the right to freedom of thought, conscience and religion" —not maths and physics—"““under both Article 9 of the European Convention on Human Rights and Article 14(1) of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. The UK is also under an obligation to assure to the child who is capable of forming his or her own views the right to express those views freely in all matters affecting the child, and to give those views due weight in accordance with the age and maturity of the child.””" It is not a question of maths and physics. Also, it is not a question of 16-year-olds; the amendment refers to sixth formers.
