Proceeding contribution from Kelvin Hopkins (Labour) in the House of Commons on Monday, 27 November 2006. It occurred during Queen's speech debate on Treasury and Work and Pensions.

Treasury and Work and Pensions

I have recently been looking at the Government’s debt compared with that in the past and of other countries. Actually, our overall debt is quite low and it would make sense to allow public debt, especially for investment, to rise. We could substitute public debt for private debt and save a lot on revenue spending by the Exchequer.
