Proceeding contribution from Lord Falconer of Thoroton (Labour) in the House of Lords on Wednesday, 14 March 2007. It occurred during Non-legislative formal proceeding on House of Lords: Reform.

House of Lords: Reform

My Lords, the most reverend Primate the Archbishop of York would like it to be known that he tried to get back for the end of the debate yesterday from the state banquet at Buckingham Palace, but he arrived at 10.14 pm, after we had adjourned. The right reverend Prelate the Bishop of Chester was taken ill, which is why he was not here at the end. Although it looked as though the Church of England was rather depleted at the end of the debate, it was for unavoidable reasons—acts of God, one might say. I beg to move that this House is of the opinion that a reformed House of Lords should be fully elected. Moved, That this House is of the opinion that a reformed House of Lords should be fully elected.—(Lord Falconer of Thoroton.) On Question, Whether the said Motion shall be agreed to? Their Lordships divided: Contents, 122; Not-Contents, 326.
