Proceeding contribution from Baroness Hanham (Conservative) in the House of Lords on Monday, 30 April 2007. It occurred during Debate on bill and Committee proceeding on Greater London Authority Bill.

Greater London Authority Bill

Any other person in local government in this country is subject to scrutiny, controls, rules, and standing orders. The Mayor is the only position in this country that is like this. Having listened to the noble Lord, Lord Tope, and thinking about it carefully, we still take the view that this should be a two-term job. I cannot do anything more with this today. I beg leave to withdraw the amendment. Amendment, by leave, withdrawn. Clause 3 agreed to. Clause 4 [Confirmation hearings etc for certain appointments by the Mayor]:
