Proceeding contribution from Angus Brendan MacNeil (Scottish National Party) in the House of Commons on Monday, 19 November 2007. It occurred during Debate on bill on European Communities (Finance) Bill.
European Communities (Finance) Bill
Could not the argument be made that the issue is not actually about subsidies at all? The rate of growth in the Republic of Ireland, for example, has been double that in the United Kingdom. That has happened because Ireland left the United Kingdom and set its own tax structure to suit itself. Perhaps that is not happening in Scotland because Scotland is not independent so that it can compete, match and beat the Republic of Ireland.
