Proceeding contribution from Baroness Ussher (Labour) in the House of Commons on Wednesday, 12 December 2007. It occurred during Opposition day on Northern Rock.
Northern Rock
No, as I am coming to the end of my speech. The alternative of letting Northern Rock go down would have had severe consequences for the banking sector and the wider economy. We have taken the appropriate action. I was glad that it had cross-party support at the beginning, and I hope there will be cross-party support for the Government amendment this evening.
