Proceeding contribution from Yvette Cooper (Labour) in the House of Commons on Thursday, 21 February 2008. It occurred during Debate on bill on Banking (Special Provisions) Bill.

Banking (Special Provisions) Bill

In a moment. We have been clear that we are taking the bank into public ownership not because we believe there is a public function that we need it to fulfil, but in order to safeguard the stability of the financial system and the interests of the taxpayer. I should inform the House that the Bank of England also has an exemption from the Act on the information that it holds in relation to the provision of private banking services and relations services. That is included in schedule 1 in part VI of the Freedom of Information Act, so it is written into the Act. That is important.
