Proceeding contribution from David Miliband (Labour) in the House of Commons on Tuesday, 25 March 2008. It occurred during Opposition day on Iraq Inquiry.

Iraq Inquiry

With all due respect, I believe that the right hon. and learned Gentleman thought of that line before the debate began. Given the events in Basra, it is important that I update the House on our understanding of the clashes that have taken place. In the hour between oral questions and the debate, I have spoken to our acting consul general in Basra and to our ambassador in Baghdad, and I should update the House on that, because it is relevant to this issue. Over the past two days, the Iraqi Government have launched a new phase in their efforts to assert full authority over Basra. On Monday, Prime Minister Maliki broadcast a message to the people of Basra, emphasising that the Iraqi state was responsible for security.
