Proceeding contribution from Philip Hollobone (Conservative) in the House of Commons on Monday, 9 June 2008. It occurred during Ministerial statement on Transport (Greater Manchester).

Transport (Greater Manchester)

If these proposals are as attractive as the Secretary of State suggests, surely the best way to indicate the level of local support would be to put the proposals to local people in a Greater Manchester-wide referendum. That way, she could sell the proposals, the hon. Member for Manchester, Blackley (Graham Stringer) and others could oppose them, and the Government, if they are right, could demonstrate that the public are behind them on this. If the Government are wrong, a costly mistake would be avoided.
