Proceeding contribution from Gareth Thomas (Labour) in the House of Commons on Thursday, 12 June 2008. It occurred during Debate on bill on Manchester City Council Bill [Lords](By Order).

Manchester City Council Bill [Lords](By Order)

From my research in preparation for this debate, I recognise that the considerable history behind this issue. I take my right hon. Friend's point about the legislation that has been introduced previously. The points that have been made in this debate will be made available to the researchers. Ultimately it is a decision for the Government, in the first place, and the House, more generally, as to whether we need to take further action after we have seen the conclusions reached by the researchers. As I have made clear, the Government's view is that the evidence base remains unclear. We are seeking to bring clarity to the issue, and that is the specific task of the Durham researchers. The research will be made available to all Members and those outside who are interested through publication on the Department's website.
